Deeper into the Wild

Hiking the Wilderness as a Mystic on the Trail

Deeper into the Wild consists of two hikes, each five to seven miles, this year occurring in November and May, to allow the deepening color of autumn and the emergence of spring, and the symbolism of each, to unfold. Registration can be for single hikes or for both.
The hikes are open to everyone, regardless of experience. Hiking participants will be guided into times of silence, reflection, and sharing as part of the experience, to deepen awareness,
contemplation, the quality of solitude, the sense of freedom, and the depth of the experience of community.

*Please note...Marjorie and Paul are leading 2 hikes this year, one in the fall the other in the spring. You can find information for both hikes on this page.
Led by Marjorie Rupert

Leaders for this Event

Marjorie Rupert has participated in many Oasis Ministries programs: Spiritual Direction for Spiritual Guides I, II, and Deepening Year, Contemplative Living, Southwest Pilgrimage, and day programs. It was her transformative experience on the Southwest Pilgrimage in the high desert that spurred the Deeper into the Wild hikes. Marjorie is a retired Clinical Social Worker who worked in a hospital setting and then in private counseling practice. Earlier, she worked as an Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity. This year Marjorie will complete two years of study at The Living School for Action and Contemplation, Albuquerque, NM.
The Reverend Paul W. Gennett Jr. has served as a priest in the Episcopal Church for 25 years. He received a Masters in Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1992 and recently retired as Rector at St. Thomas’s Episcopal Church in Newark, Delaware in 2017. Prior to his ordination, he was a corporate consultant for 20 years, principally serving the human resources and organizational development disciplines. For the last 20years, Paul has been enjoying his deeper calling to walk with others in his own recovering spiritual journey. He has led retreats on spiritual living and the Twelve Steps for both recovery and non-recovery communities. Paul is married and has two adult children.
A Note from Marjorie and Paul...
The meeting, helping, bonding, and experience of raw beauty, survival and transformation that occurs on the hiking trail is sometimes called "trail magic." Several Oasis pilgrims experienced this magic on a challenging "day one" hike at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, in the summer of 2015. One of the participants, after an exhausting, challenging, rain-soaked, hail-stormed, muddy day, exclaimed laughing, "This is the best day of my whole life!" Into the Wild is an effort to pass this on, helping to guide others into the transforming possibilities and joy that exist when we go deeper into the wild.
